Soothe Seasonal Coughs with Bellflower Root Tea – Even Better When Combined with Pears

As the seasons change, the temperature difference between day and night becomes more pronounced. During this transitional period, many people experience weakened immune defenses and become more prone to coughing. For those with sensitive airways, persistent coughing can be particularly uncomfortable.

Bellflower root, also known as doraji in Korean, is one of the most well-known traditional ingredients for respiratory health. Traditionally, it has been used to help relieve coughs and bronchial discomfort by helping clear excess mucus. According to Dr. Kim Hyun-seok of Gukbo Korean Medicine Clinic, bellflower root is particularly beneficial for supporting bronchial and respiratory health.

Its potential respiratory benefits are often attributed to two naturally occurring compounds: saponins and anthoxanthins.

Anthoxanthins

Anthoxanthins are natural plant pigments found in white-colored fruits and vegetables, sometimes referred to as "white foods." They have antioxidant properties that help protect the body against oxidative stress and support the elimination of harmful substances.

Anthoxanthins may also support the body's natural defenses against bacteria and viruses while helping maintain healthy lung and bronchial function.

In addition, these compounds have been associated with improvements in LDL (bad) cholesterol levels and blood pressure, potentially helping reduce the risk of cardiovascular conditions such as atherosclerosis and heart disease.

One subgroup of these compounds, isoflavones, has estrogen-like properties and may help alleviate certain symptoms associated with menopause.

Saponins

Saponins are responsible for the slightly bitter, pungent taste of bellflower root. They can stimulate the mucous membranes in the throat and stomach, promoting mucus secretion and helping loosen phlegm so it can be cleared more easily.

For this reason, bellflower root has traditionally been used to help soothe symptoms associated with seasonal respiratory conditions, including tonsillitis, bronchitis, and sore throats.

Saponins found in bellflower root may also help support cholesterol management, making this ingredient an interesting addition to a balanced diet for people concerned about cardiovascular and metabolic health.

Bellflower root is also a fiber-rich, alkaline food containing various vitamins and minerals. It provides nutrients such as calcium, potassium, iron, and essential amino acids, contributing to a well-balanced diet.

Even Better as a Tea with Pears

For additional soothing benefits, try combining bellflower root with pears in a warm tea or juice.

Pears are rich in luteolin, a naturally occurring antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties. Luteolin may help support vascular health and ease respiratory discomfort, including coughing and excess phlegm. It has also been studied for its potential role in protecting against age-related cellular damage.

According to nutritionist Kim Ji-eun, bellflower root contains saponins, similar to those found in ginseng and Korean red ginseng, which have traditionally been used to help relieve coughs and phlegm. Pears, meanwhile, are traditionally valued for their cooling and soothing properties, particularly when the throat feels irritated.

She recommends simmering pears and bellflower root together to make a traditional Korean pear drink known as baesuk or a warm herbal tea. Adding a little honey can make the drink even more soothing and enjoyable, especially when experiencing throat discomfort associated with bronchial irritation.
