If You Have Digestive Issues, Try This Fermented Grain Supplement

Digestive enzymes have remained consistently popular due to their reputation for improving digestion and boosting immunity. Enzymes are generally categorized into two types: endogenous enzymes, which are naturally produced by the body, and food-based enzymes found in fruits and grains. To compensate for a lack of enzymes, many people turn to supplements, which are commonly made by fermenting fruits with sugar to create enzyme liquids or by fermenting grains into powders or granules. Here’s how to choose and consume enzymes effectively to get the best results.

Enzymes Are More Active When Fermented at Low Temperatures
The speed at which an enzyme works in the body is called its "enzyme activity." The higher the activity, the faster it begins to work after ingestion, which helps enhance metabolism. To fully experience benefits like improved digestion and absorption, detoxification, waste elimination, and antimicrobial effects, it's important to choose a supplement with high enzyme activity. However, because manufacturers are not required to label enzyme activity, it’s often difficult to know the exact levels.
One way to gauge enzyme activity is by checking the fermentation process. The temperature during fermentation greatly affects the enzyme’s activity. Enzymes are most active at around 36.5°C (body temperature). Some products are fermented at temperatures over 45°C to speed up the process, but high temperatures can damage the enzymes. These enzymes may become inactive once ingested because they cannot adapt to the body’s temperature and die off quickly.

Don’t Mix Enzymes with Hot Water
How you consume enzymes is just as important as which one you choose. Some people mix enzyme powder or granules with hot water, but since enzymes are heat-sensitive, it’s better to take them with cool or lukewarm water. In fact, consuming them without mixing into water at all is often recommended.
Another factor is stress. Enzyme activity in the body significantly decreases under stress—studies show it can drop to as low as one-fifth or even one-tenth of the normal level. So for better results, try to take enzymes when you’re relaxed and calm.
