Pear & Balloon Flower Tea: A Soothing Remedy for Seasonal Coughs

When the seasons change, the temperature difference between day and night becomes more dramatic. During this time, many people experience a sudden drop in immunity and suffer from persistent coughing. For those with sensitive airways, constant coughing during the transitional seasons can be especially exhausting.

Balloon flower root (doraji) is one of the most well-known foods for supporting respiratory health. It has long been used as a traditional remedy for coughs and bronchitis due to its ability to help clear phlegm and pus. Dr. Hyun-Seok Kim, a traditional Korean medicine specialist at Gukbo Oriental Clinic, explains, “Doraji itself is excellent for the bronchial tubes and respiratory conditions.” Its effectiveness comes from its high content of saponins and anthoxanthins.

Anthoxanthin

Anthoxanthin, commonly found in white fruits and vegetables—also known as “white foods”—helps inhibit oxidative processes in the body and removes harmful substances. It also strengthens resistance to bacteria and viruses, boosting immunity while supporting healthy lungs and bronchial function.

Anthoxanthin is also known to lower bad cholesterol and blood pressure, helping prevent arteriosclerosis and heart disease. One of its key components, isoflavones, has estrogen-like effects and is particularly effective at easing menopausal symptoms in women.

Saponin

Saponins, which give doraji its slightly bitter taste, stimulate the mucous membranes of the throat and stomach, increasing mucus secretion and helping to expel phlegm. This makes doraji especially beneficial for common seasonal ailments such as tonsillitis, bronchitis, and pharyngitis. Saponins also support metabolic health by lowering cholesterol levels in the liver, which is helpful for individuals with diabetes or high blood pressure.

Doraji is also an alkaline food rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals. With essential nutrients like calcium, potassium, iron, and amino acids, it helps balance the bodies of modern individuals who often consume too many acidic foods.

Even Better When Paired with Pear

Doraji becomes even more effective when consumed as a tea or syrup together with pears. Pears are rich in luteolin, an antioxidant known for reducing inflammation in blood vessels and relieving symptoms such as phlegm and coughing. Luteolin also helps slow aging and may offer anticancer benefits.

Nutritionist Ji-Eun Kim from HiDoc explains, “Doraji contains saponins similar to those in ginseng and red ginseng, making it effective for coughs and phlegm. Pears, on the other hand, help reduce heat and soothe a sore throat.” She adds, “When dealing with bronchitis or throat discomfort, boiling pear or doraji to make a pear dessert (baesuk) or tea can be very helpful. Adding honey enhances the benefits even further.”
