This Powder for Constipation—Why You Must Take It with Water

Many people suffering from constipation turn to psyllium husk powder to relieve their symptoms. Psyllium husk is the outer layer of the seeds of the plantain plant (Plantago), and its Korean name comes from another name for the plant, “chajeoncho.” It has long been used in countries like India and China to treat conditions such as constipation, diarrhea, hemorrhoids, bladder disorders, and high blood pressure. In Europe, it is also known for helping manage cholesterol and blood sugar levels. Here’s a closer look at its benefits, side effects, and precautions.

High in Fiber—Helps with Digestion and Blood Sugar Control

More than 80% of psyllium husk is dietary fiber, containing both soluble and insoluble fiber.

  • Soluble fiber absorbs waste in the intestines, increases stool viscosity, and improves bowel movement.
  • Insoluble fiber absorbs water, increases stool bulk, and shortens transit time through the colon, helping relieve constipation.

According to Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, psyllium husk contains a high amount of hemicellulose, which stimulates bowel movement.

Key Benefits of Psyllium Husk

1. Improves bowel movements
Soluble fiber acts as a prebiotic, feeding beneficial gut bacteria and promoting intestinal activity. Insoluble fiber increases stool volume, stimulating the intestines.
A study conducted by the University of Nebraska Medical Center showed that after 8 weeks of psyllium intake, constipation patients experienced improvements in stool frequency, weight, and consistency.
For this effect, a daily intake of at least 5g is recommended.

2. Helps lower cholesterol
Psyllium husk can improve cholesterol levels by preventing the reabsorption of bile acids, increasing the body’s use of cholesterol.
A study from the University of Toronto found that taking psyllium for over 3 weeks significantly reduced LDL (“bad”) cholesterol levels.
For cholesterol benefits, at least 6g per day is recommended.

3. Supports blood sugar control
Soluble fiber forms a gel when mixed with water, slowing digestion and preventing rapid spikes in blood sugar. This helps reduce insulin demand and may lower the risk of insulin resistance. It also supports circulation and helps prevent conditions like high blood pressure and atherosclerosis.

4. Aids in weight management
When combined with exercise, psyllium can support weight loss. It works similarly to fiber-rich fruits and vegetables by promoting satiety. While it does not cause immediate weight loss, it helps with long-term dietary balance. Its ability to expand when mixed with water increases fullness and helps prevent overeating.

Side Effects & Why Water Is Essential

There are two main potential side effects: allergic reactions and digestive issues.

  • People allergic to psyllium may experience rash, redness, or itching and should stop taking it immediately.
  • Excessive intake (over 10g per day) may slow digestion and cause bloating or gas.

Although psyllium may slightly interfere with mineral absorption, this is not considered clinically significant.

Most importantly, adequate water intake is essential.
If psyllium is consumed without enough water, it can harden in the intestines and actually worsen constipation.

To ensure effectiveness:

  • Drink at least one full glass of water when taking psyllium
  • Maintain daily fluid intake of at least 1.5 liters

Proper hydration is key to maximizing the benefits of psyllium husk.
